Key Points

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from the primary task of driving. For CDL drivers, the stakes are significantly higher — a loaded tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 lbs and takes much longer to stop than a passenger vehicle.

Under FMCSA regulations, commercial drivers are prohibited from texting or using a hand-held mobile device while operating a commercial motor vehicle. Violations can result in fines, disqualification, and out-of-service orders.

The three main types of distraction are: visual (taking your eyes off the road), manual (taking your hands off the wheel), and cognitive (taking your mind off driving). Texting combines all three.
